Art of the Mende Culture of Africa

FAIN: GM-10211-73

University of Maryland, College Park (College Park, MD 20742-5141)
Eleanor Green (Project Director: July 1973 to present)

"The Art of the Mende," an exhibition to originate at the University of Maryland and travel to five and perhaps more participating museums, will relate the ritual sculptures used by the Sande and Yassi women's societies to the totality of Mende culture. The exhibition will also include gongoli masks, fetishes, Momoli soapstone figures of the 15th and 16th centuries and the Afro-Portugese ivories carved during this period for export.
