To plan an exhibition illustrating for the first time the elements in the imaginative and intellectual life of 17th century Holland using historical painting to explore the imagery of Dutch painters and how it relates to the passions and intelligence which characterized this civilization. The character of the Dutch experience as related to classical mythology and Protestant religion as well as classical history, contemporary events, military and naval scenes and allegory will be explored.
