To produce a six-episode serial dramatization of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter: to enable American television viewers and students to approach a central work in the American literary tradition and to foster appreciation of the historical literary, and cultural issues which are contained within the book and which relate to a major aspect of the American experience.
