Toby Town, Maryland, an old slave community surrounded by the affluent suburb of Potomac, stands, with its shanties and outhouses substantially unchanged, just the way it has for the past 100 years. The Davis and Martin families bought most of the land for $20 an acre in 1875. With the help of one of the residents, a complete history of the establishment, growth and demise of Toby Town will be compiled and put into book form for use in Montgomery county schools and for other historical and instructional purposes.
