From Communism to Capitalism: A Study of the Amana Colonies

FAIN: GY-10019-72

Kirkwood Community College (Cedar Rapids, IA 52404-5299)
Wayne R. Larson (Project Director: June 1972 to present)

To explore and preserve the historical growth and development of the Amana Colonies of southeastern Iowa, a group of villages founded in the 1850s by German refuges seeking religious freedom. To identify the sociological and philosophical implications of the Colonies' change from a unique communistic society to a capitalistic society. To suggest current implications of this experience upon their society and society as a whole. All will be expressed in a traveling multi-media exhibit and an illustrated student magazine and made available to communities within the seven-county area served by the College and to all other interested persons.
