Through an historical study of coloring books the P.I. plans to examine the transformation of painting books into coloring books after the invention of the toy wax crayon, the development of the American coloring book in the 20th c, the reflection of American culture through coloring books, the variety of ways coloring books can inform and teach through different stylistic presentations and subject matter.
