To analyze thoroughly the historical, scientific, and "cultural" data contained in Thomas Pynchon's two major novels--Gravity's Rainbow and V. To establish a baseline for understanding Pynchon by determining the authenticity of historical and scientific fact in the novels, and the uses to which the facts or pseudo-facts have been put in the novels. Neither of these novels has been given a thorough analysis of this kind.
