To write a social history which recreates the parish system as it operated for first and second generation Irish Catholics on the South Side of Chicago around 1920. The aim of such a study is to show how the parish reduced the awesome experience of city living to a human scale for its Irish Catholic parishioners and to suggest the necessity of similar units for the health of the city itself.
