To develop an overview of the concept, practice, and impact of discipline in the public high school from 1890-present in order to clarify the role of discipline in schooling; add to current attempts to understand the continuity with the past underlying today’s school crises; to apply this understanding to examining and dealing with the violence and alienation increasingly evinced in student’s school behavior.
