Self-Perceptions and Music of American Whalemen

Study will determine how American whalemen during the height of the industry perceived themselves and their condition and will establish the extent to which these self-perceptions were influenced by the shore population's romanticized conceptions of whaling. The project will also document the music and musical instruments played on board whaleships.
