Expanding the technical infrastructure in the Manifold digital publishing platform to enable the creation and publication of free open educational resources in the humanities.
This application requests a Level III Digital Humanities Advancement Grant to fund the addition of student-focused features to Manifold, an open-access publishing platform. Though Manifold was originally designed for use by university presses, an increasing number of users are integrating Manifold into the classroom. We will use the Advancement Grant to add teaching-specific features to Manifold that will allow it to function as an Open Educational Resource (OER) platform. With these new features, instructors can use Manifold to build free, high-quality, dynamic humanities instructional materials that engage students with multimedia-enriched texts, support social annotation, and help remove the barrier of high textbook costs. With the support of this grant, Manifold will become as powerful a tool for the classroom as it has been for scholarly publishers.

Abstract: In place of a model that considers print and digital publishing as inherently separate processes, and that places digital publishing as the inevitable evolutionary endpoint of the codex form, we propose—building on work done by the Manifold team—“hybrid publishing” as a model that involves concurrent print and digital editorial and publication processes. In fact, we will show that in important respects, hybrid publishing can help us reimagine the relations between print and digital publishing by aligning pre-production processes that reduce the extent to which print and digital book objects need to be produced independently. In so doing, we draw upon recent work by Jacqueline Wernimont and Elizabeth Losh that uses the model of intra-action and distributed agency to explore how the method of production—be it print or digital—acts on, or produces, new modes of reading and new readers. We are also extending Jessica Brantley’s insights into how the design of the codex form and the design of digital reading interfaces helps determine reading practices.

Abstract: As a teaching tool, Manifold allows instructors to build custom course texts and readers with embedded multimedia resources, and facilitates robust class discussions. Through the platform’s built-in annotation features, students can engage with teachers and peers in threaded conversations in either public or private reading groups. Taken together this creates a dynamic reading interface for students that integrates a central text, supplementary resources, and collaborative annotations into one coherent experience.
