The 2011 Berlin 9 Conference on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities. The grant will support the inclusion of speakers who will address issues directly pertinent to cultural heritage, digital access and preservation, and humanities research.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is proud to serve as a local organizer for the November 2011 Berlin 9 Conference on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, which will be held in North America for the first time in its nine-year history. This meeting presents an opportunity to help shape a high-level discussion on access to materials and ensure that topics central to the interests of ARL and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) are covered in detail. In particular, there will be an exploration of the opportunity the digital environment presents to ensure permanent, sustainable, and equitable access to our nation’s educational and cultural resources. It also presents an important chance to support attendance at the conference by key stakeholders from the library, academic, and museum communities. To that end, we request a Chairman’s Grant in the amount of $15,000 to help support the inclusion of speakers for this conference who will address issues directly pertinent to cultural heritage, digital access and preservation, and humanities research at the conference.
