Aubrey Beardsley: Uncollected Letters

My projected book of uncollected, unpubished letters written by Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898), the late-Victorian artist, will present new material and correct numerous serious errors in scholarship. Equally important, the letters (and therefore the book) will demonstrate the multiple forces on his work: Local conditions first shaped his drawings; European and non-European artists helped later to shape the form and content of his work; in addition, his participation in the strong alliance of artists across local, regional, and global lines against a background of nationalism and jingoism extended the breadth and depth of his art.
