Museum for African Art (Long Island City, NY 10029-8405)
Enid Schildkrout (Project Director: September 2005 to July 2009)

Planning for a traveling exhibition and a catalog on African clothing and fashion, especially the exchanges between Africa and other parts of the world over the last 200 years.

The Museum requests a Planning Grant to assemble a team of consulting scholars to plan for "African Fashions," a traveling exhibition on African dress and fashion (7,000 sq. ft., 150 objects). Through African clothing, this exhibition traces connections among cultures and across continents, the preservation and revival of traditions, and the various social and historical messages conveyed by styles of dress.Planning Grant funds will provide suport for research, viewing public and private collections, and convening a consultants' meeting, with the objective being finalization of the exhibition's object list, definition of the themes for the exhibition and its catalogue, exhibition design work and graphics and images lists.
