NEH on the Road: Frida Kahlo's Garden
FAIN: MR-265796-19
Powell Gardens (Kingsville, MO 64061-9130)
Kristy Peterson (Project Director: November 2018 to December 2024)
By hosting Frida Kahlo's Garden we will help our existing audience learn about the importance of plants in the lives of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and to learn about plants native to Mexico. We also hope this exhibition will help us attract and connect with an audience that perhaps has never been to Powell Gardens (those interested in art) to better understand our mission and learn about plants in our collection. Visitors will find this exhibition appealing because it intersects art and nature in a unique way and presents content that may be unfamiliar to people who already may know a little about Frida Kahlo. Through hosting varied public and educational programs during the exhibition, visitors will understand how nature and plants in particular were an important inspiration and way of life for Frida Kahlo. Visitors will learn the difference between a succulent, marigold, etc. and have a visual idea of what Frida's garden looked like from photographs and a recreated representation.
