Carbon COunty played a significant role during the transcontinental air race of 1919. Rawlins, the Carbon County seat, was chosen as one of the stopping points for the airplanes and one of the planes was lost after slamming into the County's Elk Mountain. Shortly after the transcontinental air race, airmail became commonplace in many parts of Wyoming, including Rawlins. The museum will do a handout that outlines the early history of aviation in Carbon County. The visitors will learn how the national movement played out at a local (county) level.
