Ancillary public humanities programs to accompany the NEH on the Road: Carnaval traveling exhibition.

The Museum of the Gulf Coast will host the temporary exhibition Carnaval! January 28 - March 18, 2012. This traveling exhibition explores the tradition of carnaval celebrations through the window of eight global communities and will be supplemented with objects from the museum's own collection representing the tradition of Mardi Gras celebrations in southeast Texas. In fact, the exhibition will be on view during Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas annual celebrations which will take place within feet of the museum's building February 16 - 19, 2012. In addition to Mardi Gras visitors, the Museum will invite the local community to participate through a Free Family Fun Day held on January 28 which will kick off the exhibition. The all day event will feature a wide variety of activities inspired by the themes of carnaval including film screenings, hands-on crafts such as masks, shoe box floats and musical instruments, dance performances such as Samba/Capoeira and Zumba demonstrations/classes.
