A preservation assessment of archives, manuscripts, maps, and other records related to the history of Newport News, Virginia, from the 1820s to the 1980s. A workshop would educate staff on proper preservation procedures.

The proposed project of the Newport News Public Library System is composed of a preservation assessment and a collections care training session conducted by a professional conservator. The portion of the Martha Woodroof Hiden Memorial Virginiana Collection which is considered rare and irreplaceable will be assessed. The items to be reviewed are the Old Dominion Land Company Records, the World War I related documents, map and the scrap book collections. These materials are dated from 1828-1988. The conservator will provide a written report with priorities. The conservator will also conduct an one day session on collection care for the three staff members who work within the Martha Woodroof Hiden Memorial Collection.
