FAIN: PA-51514-06

Emporia State University (Emporia, KS 66801-5087)
Heather A Wade (Project Director: May 2005 to May 2007)

A preservation assessment of the special collections held by the Emporia State University Libraries and Archives and a preservation training workshop for library and archival staff.

With the help of a consultant, Emporia State University Libraries and Archives will undertake a preservation assessment of its archival holdings at two sites to define an optimal long-range plan for the care of its collections and present a preservation workshop based on the findings of the survey for the benefit of the institution's community of personnel and users. Unsound and deterioration environmental conditions at the storage sites threaten unique and nationally significant collections including the papers of William Allen White (1864-1944), a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist; the May Massee Collection of original artwork for over 900 children's books (1883-1966); and the Walter M. Andersen Collection of nearly 50,000 photographic images documenting the history of Kansas and US railroad history from 1860-2001. This preservation assessment will provide the institution with information pertaining to current facilities, collection care policies, and emergency preparedness.
