FAIN: PA-51583-06

Erie Canal Museum Inc. (Syracuse, NY 13202-1106)
Andrew Kitzmann (Project Director: May 2005 to October 2006)

The purchase of storage racks and a cabinet for archival holdings that document the construction and maintenance of the Erie Canal in New York state. Ultraviolet filtering film would be purchased to protect the museum's exhibition and research areas from light.

A Preservation Assistance Grant is requested to purchase record storage racks to safely house approximately 2,000 archival records, manuscripts, documents, photographs, and artifacts and a steel filing cabinet to house collection records in safe, secure storage. UV filtering plastic will be installed to windows in the exhibition gallery, library, and collection storage to protect collection materials from damaging ultra-violet light. The plan of work will significantly improve the care, use, and preservation of the Erie Canal Museum's unique Erie Canal-related collection materials and addresses storage and light control issues identified in the Museum's 2003 IMLS CAP survey.
