Preservation Assessment of Collections at Massanutten Regional Library.

FAIN: PA-51638-06

Massanutten Regional Library (Harrisonburg, VA 22035)
Lora J. Rose (Project Director: May 2005 to June 2006)

A general preservation assessment, the purchase of environmental monitoring equipment, and preservation materials for books, photographs, correspondence, audiotapes, and other records related to the history of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and the surrounding communities during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Massanutten Regional Library System proposes to hire a consultant to conduct a preservation needs assessment of its Genealogy and Local History collections. The consultant will conduct an on-site survey at two of the branches in the library system. Through visits and interviews, she will assess the condition, security, and environmental conditions of these collections. Her final report will make recommendations for improving security, improving environmental housing conditions, preserving and managing, reviewing the disaster plan, and defining on-going financial needs of the collection. In her letter of commitment the consultant recommends the purchase of environmental monitoring equipment in addition to the needs assessment.
