Centennial Decade Scrapbook Preservation Project

FAIN: PA-51676-06

Montclair Art Museum (Montclair, NJ 07042-1582)
Jeffrey Guerrier (Project Director: May 2005 to October 2007)

A conservation assessment of scrapbooks that document the history of the museum and the surrounding community and region, from 1909 through 1992, and a scrapbook preservation workshop for staff, volunteers, and colleagues from neighboring institutions.

This project will enable the Museum to hire a professional book conservator from the NEDCC to assess its unique set of 66 historical scrapbooks that capture and chronicle the cultural history of the Museum, community and region (1909-1992), and are in a critical stage of deterioration. This grant will support a training workshop for the Museum staff, library volunteers, and colleagues from local organizations that will focus on preservation and conservation strategies for scrapbooks, including actions that can be taken in-house by non-conservators. In addition, the grant will cover costs to purchase and ship the archival supplies recommended by the conservator to properly preserve and house the scrapbooks for continued research.
