Preservation Housing of James H. and Candace A. Van Alen Collection

FAIN: PA-51683-06

Redwood Library and Athenaeum (Newport, RI 02840)
Lisa Carole Long (Project Director: May 2005 to April 2007)

The purchase of preservation supplies to rehouse the James H. and Candace A. Van Alen Collection, composed mostly of still images, that document the history and culture of Newport, Rhode Island, since the 1850s.

The National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant would support the purchase of preservation supplies needed to properly house the James H. and Candace A.Van Alen Collection. It is a rather large collection encompassing 105 cubic feet of material; a good portion of that being photographic materials. We have done what we can to stabilize the collection through sorting, reboxing, and isolating items with mold and fire damage. We are now focusing on the proper housing for long term storage. The NEH Preservation Assistance Grant would help us to properly house the Van Alen Collection in preservation quality photo sleeves, tissue, file folders, boxes, etc.
