Collections Management Workshop and Purchase of Archival Supplies

FAIN: PA-51701-06

Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center (Portland, OR 97209-3903)
June Arima Schumann (Project Director: May 2005 to January 2007)

A preservation workshop for the center's staff and volunteers to improve the care of collections that document Issei immigration, the events during World War II related to the evacuation of Japanese Americans from the West Coast, and their return to Oregon after the war.

The Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center will hold a one day collections management workshop for volunteers and staff. The workshop will provide training in proper care and storage methods for many types of artifacts and review collections cataloging and record keeping methods. Archival supplies and materials will be purchased to provide for the upgrade of storage for the collections. ONLC maintains a collection of national interest that documents the history of Issei immigration and contributions to the settlement, economy, and civic life of Oregon and the surrounding region. The collections room and shelving is new and very suitable, and this grant will provide the hands on training and archival supplies so urgently needed.
