FAIN: PA-51709-06

Historic Hillsborough Commission (Hillsborough, NC 27278-2124)
Elvan Cobb (Project Director: May 2005 to November 2007)

The purchase of storage furniture and preservation supplies to rehouse manuscripts, maps, books, photographs, and artifacts related to the founding and operation of Burwell Female School, 1837 to 1857.

The Historic Hillsborough Commission’s (HHC)collection, located at the Burwell School Historic Site in a 19th c. structure that served as an antebellum girls’ school, constitutes a comprehensive collection of information on the Burwell Family, enslaved people, the Burwell School, its students, the town of Hillsborough, and the HHC. These documents are crucial to scholars, townspeople and the HHC for research, interpretation and programming that serve the community at-large. HHC is applying for a $4068 grant for the purchase of metal storage cabinets, an archival quality map case, archival document boxes, and other archival supplies. These purchases are fundamental to the preservation, accessibility and continued growth of HHC’s archives.
