Creation of an image archive of interpretive illustrations in printed editions of Cervantes' "Don Quixote" from 1620 to the present.

We propose to create a hypertextual archive of Quixote illustrations. Two obstacles have prevented the publication of a comprehensive archive: 1) the rarity of and difficult access to the materials, and 2) the technical and financial difficulties in disseminating such an archive in print format. The advent of hypertext, digital libraries, and the Internet make the impossible dream of visualizing the Quixote a realizable goal. The Cervantes Project will create a documented and searchable digital archive to make accessible a rich artistic tradition and to recover and explore in new ways the connection between words and images.
