MUSA: Damage Caused by Hurricane Maria

FAIN: PB-260724-18

University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez (Mayaguez, PR 00680-6475)
Zorali De Feria (Project Director: November 2017 to December 2019)

Assessing the condition of the entire art collection, cleaning and repairing items affected by the hurricane, and providing safe storage for hundreds of art works.

The NEH Emergency Grant would further the prevention and conservation efforts of the Museo de Arte MUSA of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, to better prepare it for an atmospheric event such as Hurricane María, which affected the island in September 2017.  The museum would use the funds to acquire museum-quality equipment and supplies, as well as the intervention of a conservator to stabilize the collections damaged by failure of the climate control system during the power outage.  The project would also provide professional experience to the art students who work at the museum as part of university programs, under the supervision of the registrar.
