Desmond Bertrand-Pitts (Project Director: April 2018 to November 2022)

The cleanup and stabilization of the Center for African American Military History (Buffalo Soldiers National Museum). Funds would be used to purchase supplies and materials for replacing floors, repainting walls and ceilings to prevent mold, and resealing portions of the museum’s brick walls to prevent further water intrusion.

During Hurricane Harvey, the museum building experienced structural damage to the exterior walls and interior ceilings and floors, causing water intrusion in several exhibition spaces. Several collection items were damaged, including 10 paintings, two mannequins with uniforms, and a binder of documents. The museum has indicated that these sources will be assessed and treated moving forward, but that its highest priorities are the repairs to the facility that houses and displays the collections.
