The Old Capitol Museum of Mississippi History, under the aegis of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, has holdings of over 11,000 objects that reflect the broad range of Mississippi history from the Native American period through colonial settlement to the present. High winds from Hurricane Katrina rolled the copper roof from the south end of the Old Capitol and drove rain in, damaging both the building, a National Historic Landmark property, and the collections. All 3,200 artifacts from the damaged areas have been moved to dry areas in the state complex and a team of experienced conservators have conducted a preliminary assessment. Hundreds of artifacts were damaged, and conservation costs are expected to total up to $400,000. Among the items damaged were original paintings by William Hollingsworth and Marie Hull, textiles, firearms and swords, Choctaw baskets, and furniture, all now in need of immediate care and treatment.
