Education and Training in Moving Image Preservation

Scholarships for 24 internships as part of New York University’s Moving Image Archives Program (MIAP).  Fourteen scholarships of $7,000 each would place students in New York City cultural heritage institutions for a semester, while another 10 scholarships of $10,000 each would place them at institutions across the country for a summer.

The Moving Image Archiving and Preservation (MIAP) Program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts requests stipends for graduate student internships in important humanities collections. This funding would support 24 internships across a two-year period. Researchers in a variety of disciplines ranging from anthropology, history, and literature, to communications, cultural studies, and philosophy, rely on audiovisual collections for teaching, scholarship, and public programming. However, analog collections remain largely neglected, vulnerable to deterioration and permanent loss, while most born-digital works sit on hard drives, discs, and servers, unavailable to scholars and the public. As one of only a few US graduate programs focused on training audiovisual archivists, MIAP is preparing future professionals to assess and preserve both older media formats and born-digital works. Internships contribute to our students' education and to the accessibility of collections at internship sites.
