Storage and Preservation of Sanborn Maps

FAIN: PG-50030-07

Historic Charleston Foundation (Charleston, SC 29402-1120)
Karen Brickman Emmons (Project Director: May 2006 to June 2007)

The purchase of a storage cabinet and archival supplies to rehouse historic Sanborn fire insurance maps, documenting buildings and properties in Charleston in 1866.

The purpose of this grant is to obtain funding for the purchase of a five-drawer horizontal flat file cabinet and file folders that will be used to improve the storage and preservation of, and access to, the Insurance Maps of Charleston, S.C., 1902 (Vol. One), published by the Sanborn Map Company, which is an important and valuable resource in the collection of the Margaretta Childs Archives of Historic Charleston Foundation. The grant would support the following activities: housing the sheets in acid-free map folders, labeling each folder to identify contents, and distributing the maps throughout the file cabinet drawers. The project will be conducted in conjunction with a separate project that entails the creation of L-sealed archival polyester sleeves in which the maps will be inserted. Once the project is completed, file drawers will be labeled and a finding aid will be created.
