A Conservation Assessment of 102 Currier & Ives Lithographs

FAIN: PG-50080-07

Heritage Museums and Gardens (Sandwich, MA 02563-2110)
Jennifer Yunginger Madden (Project Director: May 2006 to September 2007)

A conservation assessment of 102 Currier & Ives lithographs and the preparation of a treatment plan for their preservation.

The Preservation Assistance Grant would support a conservation assessment of the nationally recognized collection of Currier & Ives lithographs belonging to Heritage Museums & Gardens. More than 40% of the collection is matted and framed in deleterious materials, and the conditions of the lithographs have not been determined out of their frames. A senior paper conservator from the Northeast Document Conservation Center will assess the museum's collection of prints. He will inspect, write a conservation report and, when appropriate, a treatment proposal for each print. He will also prioritize the prints for treatment. This information will allow the museum to move forward in a knowledgeable way to preserve the collection for the future, as well as make it ready for exhibition and loans in the coming years.
