Collections Assessment for General John A. Logan Museum

FAIN: PG-50145-07

General John A. Logan Museum (Murphysboro, IL 62966-2542)
Vickie Lynn Devenport (Project Director: May 2006 to February 2008)

A general conservation assessment of collections that examine the life of General John Logan (1826-1886), who volunteered for the Mexican War in 1846, became a volunteer general in the Civil War, and then pursued a political career that led from county clerk to U.S. Senator. The museum's collections include household furnishings, military memorabilia, photographs, maps, and correspondence.

With the proposed Preservation Assistance Grant the General John A. Logan Museum will contract with Ms. Shelley Reisman Paine, to conduct a general assessment of the museum collections of approximately 1,400 items. This assessment will concentrate on three levels of recommendations: 1) short-term remedial improvements to the existing storage space, equipment and conditions; 2) recommendations for the purchase of preservation materials; and 3) recommendations for longer-term plans for equipment and environmental parameters for additional collection space. The museum will also purchase the necessary preservation materials to improve storage of the collection.
