Archival Rehousing and Improved Storage of Works of Art on Paper in the Slater Memorial Museum

The purchase of archival supplies, storage cabinets, and shelving to rehouse over 600 works of art on paper, documenting the history of Norwich from the 18th through the 20th century.

The Slater Memorial Museum (est. 1888), a department of the Norwich Free Academy (est. 1854) will purchase archival storage materials and shelving to rehouse and relocate to improved storage facilities its artisically significant collection of over 600 18th- through 20th-century American works on paper that are related to the local history of Norwich, Connecticut, and the institutional history of the Norwich Free Academy. The works are currently framed and stored in old plywood bins in an attic without climate control, reached by several flights of steep wooden stairs. To improve the storage conditions and access to this important humanities collection for museum staff, students, scholars, and the public, the works will be removed from their old frames; acid-free tissue will be layered between the mat window and the object; and the art will be stored in conservation solander boxes. The solander boxes will be relocated to steel shelving units in an upgraded storage room with improved climate control.
