Mobile Storage Unit for Maitland Historical Museum

FAIN: PG-50289-08

Maitland Historical Society (Maitland, FL 32794)
Betty Sample (Project Director: May 2007 to December 2009)

Purchase of storage furniture to rehouse archives, photographs, audio and video collections that illustrate life in Maitland, Florida, and surrounding areas during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Maitland Historical Society operates four museums and houses artifacts and documents that are treasures to the Maitland community. Manuscript and photographic artifacts relating to the history of Maitland and Central Florida are currently housed in a 10-drawer map case, an 8' x 1.5' storage closet retrofitted with 14 wooden shelves to house document storage boxes, and oversize artifact shelving in a 9' x 10' climate controlled storage room. The purchase and installation of high density mobile storage would triple the museum's storage capacity and allow the retrofitted closet to be used for archival supply storage as well as storage of unprocessed donations. This vital shelving system would greatly improve the Society's ability to serve the community, providing increased accessibility to the public and staff for research; more space to grow the collection; and a more efficient, organized system. The system is also movable, so that the shelving can be used in any future expansion.
