Preserving the Heritage of Southeast Arkansas: Preservation Supplies and Processing Training

FAIN: PG-50358-08

University of Arkansas, Monticello (Monticello, AR 71656-0001)
Mary Cleta Heady (Project Director: May 2007 to September 2009)

The purchase of archival preservation supplies and a training workshop for the staff of the University's archives and special collections. The collection includes 603 linear feet of books and periodicals and 110 linear feet of newspaper materials in print and microfilm documenting the history of Southeast Arkansas, the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and the Ashley, Drew and Northern Railroads.

This proposal requests funds for the purchase of preservation supplies and would provide for a preservation workshop, as recommended in the 2006 NEH funded preservation assessment conducted by Amigos Imaging and Preservation Services. The supplies will be used to process and protect the Tedder collection, a significant portion of the University archival collection, and to protect fragile journal volumes. The Tedder collection includes 63 linear feet of organizational records of several railroad lines in southeast Arkansas. The University archival collection includes 279 linear feet of University publications, personal papers of faculty, correspondence, minutes of meetings, photos, and subject files. The journals are late nineteenth and early twentieth century publications difficult to find elsewhere in southeast Arkansas. The proposal also requests funds for a two day workshop which will provide training on using the recommended supplies to process the collections.
