Moving Image Collection Rehousing Project
FAIN: PG-50412-08
California Institute of the Arts (Valencia, CA 91355-2340)
Karen Baxter (Project Director: May 2007 to September 2009)
The purchase of preservation supplies and equipment to rehouse 2,711 items in various formats in the institute's moving image collection of exploratory and experimental films.
This grant will support a re-housing project to upgrade and increase preservation quality storage and conditions in the film storage room: replace and add steel shelves, re-can the film collection in archival containers, and change storage of rare and irreplaceable films to cores from their existing reels. This will mitigate further damage to this at-risk, historically significant film and older videotape collection that spans the 1920s to the present. The collection is used for teaching, study, research, exhibitions and institute promotion, and reflects the unique, collective contribution of CalArts to cinematic practice, history and education. Supporting the curriculum of a premier film, art and performance college in the U.S., the loss of this critical material would be detrimental to researchers of experimental and independent animation and film, and to the education of artists and filmmakers.
