Library Collection Preservation Project

FAIN: PG-50440-08

Historical Society of Frankford (Philadelphia, PA 19124-3605)
Jack McCarthy (Project Director: May 2007 to December 2009)

Purchase of archival storage supplies and equipment to preserve a collection of personal papers, manuscripts, legal records, maps and deeds, photographs, government and military records, works of art on paper, books, and newspapers documenting the history of Philadelphia and the surrounding area.

The Historical Society of Frankford requests (HSF) $5,000 in support of a Library Collection Preservation Project that will entail purchasing archival storage supplies and equipment and re-housing and storing some 75 cubic feet of late-seventeenth through early-twentieth century archival materials. The materials will be re-housed and stored by HSF volunteers and interns from January 2008 through June 2009 under the supervision of HSF's Archival Consultant Jack McCarthy. The project will be a follow-up to HSF's 2006-2007 NEH-funded archival re-housing and storage project. Mr. McCarthy's May 2007 archival consultant report to HSF outlines the status of the HSF Library Collection and recommends a series of immediate steps HSF should take to continue its efforts at preserving and arranging and describing the Collection. The recommendations in the report form the basis of this project proposal.
