Preservation Assessment of the Women's History and Resource Center

FAIN: PG-50459-09

General Federation of Women's Clubs (Washington, DC 20036-2990)
Gail Rodgers McCormick (Project Director: May 2008 to May 2010)

A general preservation assessment of the archives, special collections, and research library of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. These collections document advocacy for women's suffrage, child labor and juvenile court laws; the Pure Food and Drug Act; the establishment of national parks; the preservation of Native American culture; peacetime uses of technology; libraries and literacy; wartime civil service; the establishment of the United Nations; and the Equal Rights Amendment.

The General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) requests a Preservation Assistance Grant for a general preservation assessment of its diverse historical collections, which are managed by the GFWC's Women's History and Resource Center (WHRC), which collects, preserves, interprets, and promotes the history of the GFWC and women volunteers. The assessment will provide a review of existing policies, procedures, exhibit and storage spaces, and environmental conditions, and recommend short-term, mid-term, and long-range goals for developing a comprehensive collections management program to improve preservation of and access to the collections.
