Preservation Assessment of the Appalachian State University Special Collections

FAIN: PG-50473-09

Appalachian State University (Boone, NC 28608-0001)
Pamela Mitchem (Project Director: May 2008 to March 2010)

A general preservation assessment of the university's special collections documenting the Appalachian region and stock car racing and also the historical records of the university.

Special Collections, Belk Library, Appalachian State University, seeks a Preservation Assistance Grant to hire a consulting conservator to conduct a preservation assessment and conservation assessment of the unit's manuscripts, records, and reference and rare book collections. Since we are essentially a newly formed unit and given some of the problems we are having with our new building, we feel the need to obtain professional consultation on the condition of our collections. The Appalachian Collection materials are of particular concern as they are our oldest and most damaged materials. The William Leonard Eury Appalachian Collection is a world-renowned repository for materials related to the Appalachian region. Our Special Collections are used by a wide variety of researchers supporting the research needs of the University's Humanities programs (particularly religion, literature, music, and cultural studies) as well as outside researchers.
