Disaster Preparedness Plan for the Library and Archives at Louisiana State University, Alexandria

FAIN: PG-50502-09

Louisiana State University, Alexandria (Alexandria, LA 71302-9119)
Michelle Riggs (Project Director: May 2008 to October 2010)

A workshop that will train library staff and campus emergency response personnel in disaster preparedness and enable them to create a disaster response plan tailored to the needs of the library, the collections of which include books, archives, manuscripts, photographs, and works of art. The grant will further support the purchase of supplies needed for the workshop.

Louisiana State University at Alexandria seeks a grant from the NEH to provide funding for a workshop to prepare a disaster preparedness plan for the library and archive. Central Louisiana, and specifically LSUA, suffered damage from the catastrophic hurricanes of 2005. The university has composed an emergency plan, but the library and newly created archive do not feature in the campus' plan. This grant would enable Library Services at LSUA to attend a workshop that would facilitate the creation of a disaster preparedness plan to prevent or mitigate damage to valuable and, in some cases, irreplaceable materials in the event of a disaster, and in the purchase of supplies to aid preservation and recovery of those materials.
