Preserving and Rehousing Archival Materials at the Shelton Historical Society

FAIN: PG-50506-09

Shelton Historical Society (Shelton, CT 06484-1155)
Ellen Kolesk (Project Director: May 2008 to September 2010)

The purchase of recommended storage supplies and equipment for the society's collection of books, pamphlets, photographs, and other printed material. These sources document rural and industrial life in New England at the turn of the 20th century and are actively used in research, museum interpretation, and educational programs.

The proposed project is to purchase archival supplies and replacement shelving to preserve and rehouse the library collections of the Shelton Historical Society according to the recommendations presented in the 2008 Preservation Planning Survey by Angelina Altobellis of the North East Document Conservation Center. The librarian will enlist volunteers to sort and box archival materials to be processed at a later time. Items identified in need of rehousing will be stored according to new preservation methods. The unprocessed collection will be stored on new shelving units constructed to archival standards and appropriately configured in the storeroom which is being renovated and climatically controlled for this purpose.
