Conservation Assessment and Environmental Monitoring of the Historical Collections of Union College

FAIN: PG-50519-09

Union College (Lincoln, NE 68506-4345)
Sabrina Riley (Project Director: May 2008 to October 2010)

The hiring of a consultant who would perform a conservation assessment, make recommendations for the purchase of environmental monitoring equipment, and train staff in its use.

A conservation assessment will be conducted by a consultant from the Nebraska State Historical Society. The consultant will provide a report addressing issues including but not limited to general institutional information; staffing, building and facilities; climate control and environment; collections and collection policies; exhibitions; storage; and emergency preparedness. The consultant will also specify environmental monitoring equipment to be purchased with any remaining funds from the grant. Union College staff have been conscientious in collecting documents and artifacts which tell the story of the institution's development and its role in the local community, the state, and the Seventh-day Adventist denomination. This resource is integral to the education of many college students and valuable to researchers around the world. A conservation assessment will help Union College preserve this collection for the benefit of future generations.
