Environmental Monitoring and Storage of Historical Collections

FAIN: PG-50531-09

California Historical Society (San Francisco, CA 94109-2840)
Mary Morganti (Project Director: May 2008 to August 2013)

The purchase of environmental monitoring equipment and protective storage containers for many of the society's most unique, historically significant books and pamphlets. These materials document the transition of California from a Mexican province to American statehood, including information on overland travel, early settlements, and the Gold Rush.

The NEH Preservation grant will support two priority projects that directly address preservation and care of CHS collections: 1) Purchase of environmental monitoring software and data loggers for each of the CHS four collections storage vaults; and, 2) Purchase of custom-fit boxes for a significant portion of the CHS Vault Books collection that lacks boxes or any type of protective enclosure.
