Purchasing archival shelving and storage supplies and the hiring of a consultant to present a one-day workshop on basic archival arrangment and preservation practices.

The Grand Army of the Republic Civil War Museum & Library (GARCWM&L) requests $6,000 for a project to re-house and store its extraordinary Civil War-related archival collection. The funds will be used to: 1) hire a certified archivist to serve as consultant and project director, 2) purchase archival shelving, and 3) purchase archival storage supplies. The Consultant will present a one-day workshop on basic archival arrangement and preservation practices and will supervise the re-housing and storage work. The GARCWM&L Archives houses the records of the GAR and other Civil War fraternal and heritage organizations. The records contain a wealth of detailed biographical and military information on Union Army veterans and document how these organizations provided for veterans' needs and how the Civil War has been interpreted in American life. The re-housing and storage project is part of an overall coordinated strategy to ensure the preservation and accessibility of the GARCWM&L Archives.
