Preservation Assessment of Local History Collections

FAIN: PG-50646-09

Needham Free Public Library (Needham, MA 02494-3268)
Susan Priver (Project Director: May 2008 to July 2010)

A preservation assessment of the library's local history collections, which include maps, photographic prints, art on paper, and newspapers. With particular strengths in documenting the city's built environment, the collection attracts a variety of use from individuals interested in architectural, community, and family history as well as historic preservationists and New England area community planners.

The grant would support a general preservation survey of the paper-based library and archival collections of the Needham Free Public Library. The survey will: a. Assess possible risks to collections from building- and environment-related problems; b. Address fire protection and security concerns, including emergency preparedness; c. Evaluate institutional policies and procedures as they apply to preservation; d. Review the existing collections maintenance program in terms of shelf preparation, book repair, and commercial binding; e. Provide recommendations for improving storage and handling practices; and f. Review the general condition of paper based collections. The consultation will consist of a one-day site visit and a written report that will include observations and recommendations, and that can be used as a planning document. The survey will identify short-, medium-, and long-term preservation priorities in the context of the institution.
