The purchase of archival storage and preservation supplies for the society's paper-based collections, in accord with recommendations provided in a 2007 preservation assessment. The sources include personal documents, photographs, and records of local institutions and are used in a variety of ways for humanities research, education, and public programming.
The Franklin County Historical and Museum Society recently renovated an existing carriage house on the museum property into a research library with climate-controlled archival storage. The two-dimensional collection is being re-cataloged and moved from storage and public-access library areas that do not meet current archival best-practice standards to the new areas that provide proper care and safe access. This re-housing project is based on the recommendations of a conservator of the Northeast Document Conservation Center. Phase II of the Archival Preservation Project will continue to carry out the conservator's recommendations, as the Society improves the way it physically cares for its collection and fulfills a key portion of our Strategic Plan as well as maintaining the public trust.
