Improving Storage for the Museum's Collections

Purchasing preservation materials to rehouse collections of decorative and folk art created by New Jersey artists. The collections include 200 works on paper, 325 oil and acrylic paintings, 725 prints and photographs, 83 objects in stone, ceramic, and mixed media materials, 4 textiles, and 365 19th- and 20th-century bird decoys.

The Noyes Museum of Art storage renewal project will provide preservation supplies to upgrade permanent collection storage materials. Objects stored on floor level will be raised up off the floor onto padded storage. Storage shelves will be re-mounted right side up and all shelving lined with polyethylene foam or ethafoam, dependant on the size and weight of the object stored therein. More and better vertical supports and interfacing between framed artwork will be placed with appropriate materials for long-term storage. Lined boxes will be constructed to house delicate objects. The goals of the project are to upgrade collections storage by adding to and replacing current storage materials. Many of these materials are pollution causing sources, like common cardboard, thus we will be eliminating an environmental hazard to the collections as well. The successful completion of this project will have long-term benefits for the entire permanent collect by providing better quality storage and a safer, more consistent storage environment.
