Collections Storage and Climate Control Feasibility Study for the Estes Park Museum

FAIN: PG-50666-09

Town of Estes Park (Estes Park, CO 80517-5001)
Betty Kilsdonk (Project Director: May 2008 to December 2010)

Consultation to identify the storage, environmental, and lighting needs of the museum's collection of artifacts, prints, photographs, archives, and audiovisual materials, which document the history of Estes Park and surrounding communities.

The Estes Park Museum (EPM) requests a Preservation Assistance Grant of $5950 to retain the services of two consultants, a collections management specialist and an architect. The consultants will work with the museum's staff as they plan for a new building for the storage of collections which document the area's settlement and development. A collections storage facility has been identified by past surveyors as the most important step EPM can take to improve the care of its collections. The consultants will visit the site and provide guidance and technical information specifically tailored to the EPM's collections, climate and resources. Secondary goals are to identify short-term recommendations for current facility storage to help EPM until the new facility is ready; to help EPM determine if existing environmental monitoring equipment needs replacement; and to help the EPM determine if it is feasible to add environmental controls to two on-site historic outbuildings.
