The purchase of preservation supplies, including portable archival containers to aid in disaster response. The museum's collections document the history and natural environment of Florida's Sarasota Bay area and are used in exhibitions, books, newsletters, and other publications.
The first goal of the project would be to re-house the large flat files (exhibit designs, drawing plans, and large news clippings), historic books, photographic materials and manuscript collections in archival containers better suited to their specific condition needs for long term storage. The secondary goal would be to choose containers for the flat files, historic books, photographic materials and manuscript collections that would be highly portable for ease of quick relocation per the museum's Emergency Preparedness Plan. Some of the re-housing containers will fulfill both goals, but additional containers to transport items will be needed. In preparation for a possible hurricane hitting the region the collection, in order of intrinsic value, would be relocated off site in a safe location for the duration of the storm and aftermath repairs. Storage containers that are better suited to travel will allow a greater quantity of the collection to be moved to safety.
